My nephew is an amazing guy. My wife and I were both involved in his life from his birth, and he (at age 2) was the ring-bearer at our wedding. He's smart, well behaved, with a fantastic memory, and a real talent for art.

Sadly, neither of his parents were exactly stable. Both had struggles with addiction and mental health. He came to live with us when he was five, under a "temporary guardianship" arrangement, which became full custody when he was seven. There's a lot more I could say here, but I love him to bits even though he's now old enough to get embarrased when I say things like that.
